SYLLABUS

Our objective at Syllabus is to connect live art, performance art, to education and learning, and to highlight the human encounter as the base and essence of the performance and class.

Syllabus is an experimental space for developing a class format. We try to challenge the boundaries of the class as we know it and turn it into an experience of a live artistic event, which takes place at the seam line between class and performance.

The starting point of the class is the close human encounter between the performer and the spectators, which does not necessarily happen in a formal class where the status and part of each participant is clear, predetermined and unquestionable.

Enhancing the encounter between the artist and the spectators to include an instructional element as well opens a possibility of a new and intriguing experience for both sides, which turns the performance/class into a complete work of art. In this direct encounter, the artist is invited to experiment with different practices of his or her work – of the performance as a class, inventing a fictional workshop, collaborating with the audience, etc.; the public is invited to take part in or look at art in a new way, as never before.

THE CLASSES

“Syllabus” is a series of classes that are open to the public, by advanced registration.

The classes are taught by stage and performance artists that approach each lesson as a live event. During the classes, the role of the teacher is enacted as an elastic performance that stretches familiar classroom structures. In an era where most learning takes place outside of formal frameworks, Five Experimental Classes seek to establish a sense of inspiration and imagination through our collective presence in one room. The public is invited to learn with knowledgeable and professional artists in the fields of music, dance, theatre, film, and visual art. "
